watch for Mars tonight

The Astronomy Picture of the Day is so gorgeous today that I’m compelled to point it out. A Martian Halloween.

around and around and around we go

So while talking about gay characters in fictional media, said person uses Willow and Tara as an example because “It was the only example I coudl think of since I can’t say I can think of any fandoms out there with openly gay characters, not any that I’m familiar with at least.”

Then in said person’s very next post, said person claimed that gays and lesbians were not under-represented in television and other mainstream forms of fiction.

Huh?

Of course, while at that time the benefit of the doubt could still be given, it wasn’t long before said person revealed said person’s true colors as a homophobe. Thus it really shouldn’t be surprising that said person has no concept of logic or consistency.

But it’s just really annoying arguing with someone who keeps contradicting themselves. I don’t know why I bother.

small world part 2343243

When I friend someone on livejournal, I usually glance at the friends section on their user info to see what names pop out in bold meaning we both have them friended.

Usually I can predict who will be there, or the names all seem right, people we know from the same places and circles and all that. But every once in a while there will be a bold name there that is a complete surprise - someone I know from somewhere totally different and had no idea the two people would have ever come across each other.

For some reason, this always makes me very happy.

a mess

I just crammed every last dish I could into my diswasher and hit start. My counters are still covered in dirty dishes. I find this to be a very depressing situation.

That’s all.

come join me in Canada…

Minister: Canada Needs More Immigrants

Apparently we are trying to increase our population by forty million. From the article:

MONTREAL - Canada’s foreign affairs minister said Thursday that the country badly needed more immigrants to replace aging workers who are headed for retirement.

Pierre Pettigrew said that increasing the population to 40 million by welcoming more immigrants would help foot the bill for new infrastructure, such as roads and bridges.

I was just remembering when Australia wanted to increase its population by encouraging people to have more babies. This seems like a much better way to do it. There’s already plenty of the people in the world, and more babies is not what we need. Just better population distribution.

From yesterday’s ultrasound…

ultrasound picture

The picture is from the back so you can’t see it, but from another view we saw definite boy-parts :)

M. has been saying from the beginning that he was certain this one was a boy. He’s now gloating that he is two for two. He was certain Munchkin was a girl. The ultrasound tech was joking that we’d have to have more so that he could be wrong one of these days, but I’m thinking not :)

getting ready for ultrasound

Twenty minutes ago I filled my water bottle to the one liter line. It’s now a quarter of the way gone. I need to finish the rest in the next ten minutes, and my stomach is not appreciating the inundation of water.

Then in an hour - at 3:30 - I am supposed to have my ultrasound appointment, except it will probably be a little after that since those sorts of things never start on time.

I’m not supposed to use the restroom until the appointment is over. There is a baby sitting on my bladder. I think they make these rules up just to torture water.

But I am looking forward to seeing our baby. Wish us luck for a non-modest baby who will reveal gender. It was sort of neat being a surprise last time (not that we had any choice in that), but I’d like to know if I’m going to need to buy a ton of new clothes or if what we already have will work. Our newborn stuff is all pretty much gender neutral, but babies outgrow their first clothes so fast, and most stuff after that is too girly to put a boy in.

Crap. I am not going to make it through all this water in the directed time :(

tut tut tut WAIN

“Tut tut tut WAIN. Tut tut tut WAIN!”

Translation: tut tut, it looks like rain.

Someone borrowed a Winnie the Pooh video from the library.

Most frequent question asked in our house these past few days: “watch pooh bear?” She even chose it over her normal favorite the doggie show (Clifford the big Red Dog) today.

let them eat cake?

I found it rather ironic that I came across these two articles one after the other…

US poverty: chronic ill, little hope for cure.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Four decades after a U.S. president declared war on poverty, more than 37 million people in the world’s richest country are officially classified as poor and their number has been on the rise for years.

Congress Seeks to Slash Food Aid for Poor

WASHINGTON - Under orders to whittle agriculture spending by $3 billion, Republicans in Congress propose to slash food programs for the poor by $574 million and subsidies and conservation programs by $1 billion each, The Associated Press has learned.
[…]
The $574 million cut in food stamps would come from restricting access to this benefit for certain families that receive other government assistance. The restriction would shut an estimated 300,000 people out of the program.

operation sibling update

Thanks to everyone who offered congratulations after my announcement the other week :)

Re: Munchkin - she sort of knows that there’s a baby in Mommy’s tummy, but she doesn’t quite understand what this means yet. When we talk about it with her she will point and say “baby. Tummy,” with a sort of confused expression on her face.

Eventually we’re going to get her some toddler books on welcoming new babies and family structure and stuff, but we’re waiting until it is a bit closer to actually happening to really press the issue. The books will probably be Christmas presents.

She is absolutely obsessed with babies though, and has been for a long time. She loves seeing them on TV or in person when we go out, and one of her favorite activities is to sit at the computer with me while use google image search to find pictures of babies. We’re just hoping this lasts.

In other baby news, the other night I dreamed we were having twins. This is an all to common dream lately. I think it’s just my subconcious dealing with the gender issue - while we will both be happy with whataver we get, M is leaning toward wanting a boy while I am leaning toward wanting another girl (little girls are just so much fun, and we have all these cute clothes that it broke my heart to put away when Munchkin outgrew them, so I would love to bring them out again. Fraternal twins with one boy and one girl (the way it keeps happening in my dreams) would take care of that nicely, right? *shudder*

Twins do not run in my family, so it is very unlikely, thank goodness. Besides, when I was pregnant with Munchkin I kept dreaming she was a cat. The occasional bout of meowing to the contrary, those dreams certainly didn’t come true.

But still, I am looking forward to only seeing ONE baby on the ulstrasound tomorrow.

Yeeeek! Tomorrow.

ooh.. so I can post on nanowrimo

So it won’t actully let me log in, but it will let me post using my longin info in the “fast reply” button on the bottom of already existing threads. Still can’t start any new threads, but I don’t really want to anyway.

So anyone else already registered…

random numbers and nanowrimo go boom

Lately whenever I’ve tried to remember a pin number or something, I’ve had these seemingly random four digets spring to mind in place of it. I could not figure out what they meant to me or where they were coming from. Then just today three more digets planted themselves on the front, and I realized it was my grade school best friend’s phone number. She moved when we were like eleven. I haven’t dialed that number in years, and I have no idea why it has suddenly come back to me.

Strange.

In other news: Nanowrimo finally went online last night only to go boom pretty much immediately. Grrr. I was able to log in and update my registration last night, but it was too wonky for me to actually post anything in the forums, and now it is gone again. I wish they’d give a better estimate as to when they will be back up. I’m a little anxious here, and I know I’m not the only one.

Serenity and vegetarian food and Nanowrimo

My livejournal friends list is chock full of Serenity posts and spoilers today. I was being very careful to avoid them, but then I accidently stumbled across a biggy in a forum. Grrr.

By the time I get around to seeing it, no one will be talking about it any more. I wish I could see it now, but not enough to actually, you know, see it now. This is partly because I don’t have a babysitter. This is mostly because I still feel pretty crappy and the idea of sitting in a theatre seat and being bombarded by noise and big screen motion just does not sound appealing no matter how good the flick. I’m most likely going to wait for it to come out on DVD.

We are going out to dinner tonight though. There’s a buffet at my favorite (vegan) restaurant in honor of World Vegetarian day. Yum. It’s probably going to be pretty crowded though, unfortunately.

Am I the only one clicking obsessively to see if the Nanowrimo forums are back online yet? They were supposed to be up about three pacific time today, and it’s nearly a full hour past that. Grrr.
